UPDATED DUE TO COVID-19: 2020 SCHOLARSHIP GUIDELINES

Requirements:

  • Submit an original narrative film at least 2 minutes in length.
  • Must be shot on a smartphone or comparable device. This is important - because students do not have access to school equipment, and most students do not have their own camera, quality of video will not be a factor in winner selection.
  • Follow current City of Austin Coronavirus mandates – do not put yourself at risk.
  • Get creative! Use family members, pets, yourself, or inanimate objects as characters for your film.
  • Do not make a film about the COVID-19 virus (we’re all thinking about it enough anyway, however, you may make your film about being quarantined for a fictional purpose, i.e. Zombie outbreak or the like).
  • Do not use footage from another film you have made unless absolutely necessary for your story, and limit to 30 seconds maximum. Roughly 75% of your film must be new footage shot with a smartphone or comparable device.
  • If you use any stock footage from youtube, etc - same rules apply - limit to less than 30 seconds, must be applicable to story, and be sure to note in your credits.
  • Animation is 100% allowed (so long as it’s your creation)
  • Any music used must be noted in your credits.
  • You may record footage on your computer (for example, messaging with someone on social media, Facetime/Skype/Zoom, etc).
  • Put “submitted for the 2020 Carson Cummings Film Scholarship” in your credits
  • MUST Include ANY reference to a Goat. This can be a picture of a goat in the background of a scene, a character named goat, a stuffed goat, or just incorporate the word “Goat” into your film. (Carson had a pet goat in college at TCU named Goatman; he got Goatman because he was tired of mowing the yard at the house he shared with friends)
  • If you have any questions, please ask your Film Teacher first and feel free to email Alexr44@utexas.edu

No nudity, no drug/alcohol consumption by minors, no tobacco consumption by minors, no discrimination against anyone based upon ethnicity, religion, race, gender, or sexual orientation. If you have questions about these rules, ask your respective Film teacher.
